Artistic Research in Transdisciplinary Consortia — FORUM+ Article in Development

Starting Point

Why I'm Working
on This

In the past years, I have been embedded in different collaborative research ecosystems — most concretely in WP2 of Healthy Living as a Service, and through the development of ATMOS_FERA in dialogue with scientific datasets and researchers.

What exactly is the structural role of artistic research inside these contexts?
↳ This is the starting point of the FORUM+ article I am developing.

Core Question

What Does Artistic Research Do —
Structurally?

Rather than asking whether artistic research is valuable, I want to ask:

How does artistic research reorganize the epistemic conditions of collaboration inside transdisciplinary research environments?
By epistemic conditions, I mean
How problems are framed
What counts as evidence
How knowledge is negotiated
How authority is distributed
↳ This moves beyond output and impact.

Argument
Working Claim

Provisional
Argument

Artistic research enhances scientific collaboration not by producing artistic outputs, but by reorganizing how knowledge is framed, experienced, and negotiated within research ecosystems.
↳ Grounded in two case studies: HLaS and ATMOS_FERA · Not yet a formal framework — an argument from embedded practice.

Epistemic mediation

Redistribution of disciplinary authority
Experiential reorientation of data
↳ If artistic research operates at this level, we currently lack the vocabulary to articulate it.

v0.1 — Working Prototype

A qualitative diagnostic framework — not a metric, but an analytic lens. Applied to HLaS and ATMOS_FERA.

Beyond the
Article

If artistic research is increasingly embedded in research consortia, then conceptual clarity about its epistemic contribution becomes necessary — not only for theory, but for structural positioning within funding and governance contexts.

This article is a first reflective step. It may open toward more systematic development later.

Points I Would Like
Feedback On

01 Is this the right scale of claim?
02 Does this resonate with your experience in consortia?
03 Is the focus on epistemic mediation too ambitious — or sufficiently grounded?
04 Should this remain an analytical paper, or evolve toward framework development?
